Why Is There a Delay in Recording?
Understanding and reducing motion detection latency
Problem
There is a noticeable delay between when motion occurs and when the camera begins recording. This can result in missing the beginning of important events.
Cause
The system requires multiple processing steps before recording begins:
- Camera Activation - Camera wakes from standby or low-power mode
- Motion Detection - Sensors detect movement in the field of view
- AI Object Recognition - System analyzes whether detected object matches criteria (human, vehicle, etc.)
- Recording Initiation - Camera begins capturing and saving video
Each of these steps adds latency to the recording process.
Solutions
1. Increase Detection Sensitivity
Expand Detection Range:
- Open your camera app
- Navigate to Settings > Motion Detection
- Find Detection Sensitivity
- Set to the highest level or maximum
- Save changes
Benefits:
- Camera detects motion earlier when objects are farther away
- Provides more lead time before subjects reach the area of interest
- Increases likelihood of capturing full event
2. Disable Human Detection Features
Reduce AI Processing Time:
- Go to Settings > Motion Detection
- Find Human Detection options:
- Daytime Human Detection
- Nighttime Human Detection
- Disable both options
- Save settings
Benefits:
- Eliminates AI processing delay for object classification
- Camera records immediately upon detecting any motion
- Significantly faster response time
- Trade-off: Will record all motion, including animals and vehicles
3. Optimize Camera Positioning
Strategic Placement:
- Position camera to face open spaces rather than enclosed areas
- Aim toward approach paths (driveways, walkways) to detect subjects earlier
- Avoid pointing at corners or tight spaces where subjects appear suddenly
- Ensure wide field of view to capture motion sooner
Installation Tips:
- Mount 2-3 meters high, tilted down 15 degrees
- Face toward areas where people/vehicles approach from a distance
- Maximize the detection zone in front of entry points
Additional Optimization Tips
Consider Pre-Recording Settings
Some cameras support continuous or buffer recording:
- Check if your camera has pre-roll or buffer recording features
- These record continuously and save footage before the trigger event
- Consult your camera's advanced settings
Ensure Adequate Power
- Low battery or poor power can slow camera response
- Ensure camera has sufficient power supply
- Consider solar panels or direct power connection for fastest response
Update Firmware
- Newer firmware may include detection algorithm improvements
- Check for and install the latest camera firmware
- Updates can improve processing speed and reduce latency
Important Notes
- Some delay is inherent to the detection and processing system
- Balancing fast response with accurate detection requires finding the right settings for your needs
- Disabling human detection provides fastest response but may increase false alarms
- Test your settings by walking through the camera's view at different speeds and distances
